Tips For Maintaining Your Furnace

  1. Practice annual furnace tune-ups with comprehensive furnace inspections. We recommend two maintenance visits a year. Bi-annual maintenance means you won’t be caught up in a heating or cooling emergency.
  2. Have an expert inspect and adjust your thermostat if needed. Even a small adjustment can make a big difference in maintaining energy efficiency. If you use a phone app to adjust your home’s temperature, make sure it’s working and providing the right information.
  3. Do a spring shutdown. After running all winter, spring is a good time to clean and get your furnace ready for next winter. You can inspect the ductwork for leaks and other potential issues. Inspect and clean clean the vents, especially if you’ll be running an air conditioner later in the summer.
  4. After running all winter, the heating system’s filters are probably dirty and must be replaced. This part of the spring shutdown is critical to getting peak performance from your furnace next year. If your HVAC system has HEPA filter capabilities, you’ll need to replace them per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. While you’re in the areas of the filter, check to make sure the blower motor works properly. There could be dirt and dust caked onto the housing. Once this is removed, you’ll notice the blower and how it spins. There should not be any play in this blower. If it wobbles or doesn’t turn freely, the bearing could be bad. In cases where the blower is okay, throw some lube on the bearings.
  6. Check and monitor the gas control valve if you have a gas furnace. This is usually the first thing to check if your heat goes out. It could be something as simple as relighting the pilot light.
